This is Messier 31, the Great Galaxy in Andromeda. The images were taken back in early September, but I haven't had time to work on them until now.

The halo of Andromeda is vast; there's a lot of dust and stars showing in the images, but there's far more that my telescope doesn't have the sensitivity to pick up. On the annotated map the blue ellipse around Andromeda is far larger than the galaxy as it appears to my equipment. If the milky Way has a halo this big then I have to wonder if the two galaxies aren't already starting to collide.

What is showing very nicely are the star forming regions at the tips of the galaxy, where whole strings of clusters of hot blue stars can be seen.
